About

After graduating with his MA (Clin Psych) degree, Jay trained in Gestalt therapy with Erv and Miriam Polster in 1981 and 1983.  In addition he has participated in the Summer Residential training offered by Gestalt Therapy Institute of Los Angeles and, later the Gestalt Associates Training, Los Angeles.  He was certified by examinations as a Gestalt therapist by Gary Yontef Ph.D., Rita Resnick Ph.D. and Todd Burley Ph.D.  in 1986.  Jay is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC) in the State of Florida.

Jay started working as a clinical psychologist providing community-based psychological services in South Africa for a number of years.  He established his private practice in 1986 with offices in Johannesburg and Cape Town before immigrating to the USA in 2000.

Jay has worked as guest faculty trainer invited to the GTILA/GATLA Summer Residential workshops held annually in Europe from 1991 to 2010 (www.gatla.org).   In addition, Jay has taught in Slovakia from 1992-1998, training participants from both the Czech and Slovak Republics in Gestalt therapy, together with trainers from Israel and England.  This collaboration resulted in the development of two new nationally accredited Gestalt therapy Institutes in Czech and Slovak Republics with EU standards.  You can review some of the trainings and workshops that Jay has done by going to the Workshops and Training link on this website.

Jay has an interest in the “wider field” in which the person lives, including its political, spiritual and community dimensions, and has published articles on some of the ethical, professional and clinical issues that occur when dealing with political detainees; rehabilitation readiness; adolescent development and behavior; and the future for growth in Gestalt therapy.  He has recently contributed a chapter to a new edited book on advanced Gestalt therapy (Gestalt therapy: Advances in theory and practice).

With the advances in technology, Jay also enjoys doing supervision as well as long-distance counseling using Skype with therapists and clients from a variety of countries.

Jay was born in South Africa.  He immigrated to the USA in 2000 with his wife and son and lives in Sarasota, Florida.
